Cincinnati Zoo
Cincinnati Zoo is one of the major tourist attractions in Cincinnati, Ohio. This zoo was established in the year 1875 and is considered as the second oldest zoo of the United States. Spread over an area of 65.4 acres, this zoo is home to over 500 species of 1896 animals.
This zoo is conveniently located in the middle of the city and has over 1.2 million visitors annually. This zoo was formally established by Jonathan Schoonover. Landscaping was done by engineer Theodor Fundeisen and buildings were designed and constructed by Architect James W. McLaughlin. It was acquired by the city administration in the year 1932 and then onwards considerable investment was made to beautify and enrich this recreational area.
As mentioned earlier, the zoo has over 500 species of different animals which include Mammals, Reptiles, Birds, Invertebrates, Ambhibians and fish etc. Among Mammals, the zoo has different varieties of Armadillos, bats, cats, canids, bears, hooved mammals, Marsupials, primates, raccoon family, rodents, weasels, pandas, sloth, Genet, Manatee, Bearcat, Asian Elephants, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Banded Palm Civet, Sea lion, Fossa etc.
Amongst reptiles, there are different varieties of Crocodiles, Lizards, snakes and turtles. The zoo also features a unique collection of birds with different game birds, parrots, seabirds, raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, waders/shorebirds etc. Same is the case with Amphibians and fish whose various varieties never fail to attract visitors. Invertebrates are also a major attraction of this zoo as they zoo is home to various varieties of insects, Millipedes and Centipedes, spiders, scorpions etc.
The Cincinnati zoo administration has an eye on the recreational needs of the visitors that is why it continuously strives for creating events for the general public’s entertainment. The zoo celebrates spring with an event called Zoo Blooms. ‘Zoo babies’ is another attraction for the entire family where new animal additions are celebrated. Animal Encounter is another event celebrated during the summers where guests especially children are invited and educated about different animals. HallZooween is another event which spans over three weekends in October. PNC Festival of lights is another event which is celebrated from late November to start of January and is the longest running event in the entire state. The zoo timings are from 9am to 5pm and it is open 7 days a week and is conveniently located at Vine Street, Cincinnati. The zoo apart from housing a large collection of animals, also has numerous other modern attractions. It has various rides such as a train, tram and a carousel which operates throughout the week but at different timings. It also has a 4-D special effects theatre which is a treat especially for kids as it often features adventures of popular characters such as Dora, Diego, and Wizard of Oz etc.
